On Sunday, June 8, the congregation of SPC shared their gifts in support of the annual PW Birthday Offering. This special offering began in 1922 to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Women’s Auxiliary of the PCUS. At that time, each woman was asked to give one penny for each year of her life - or a dollar if she didn’t wish to reveal her age. This birthday offering has continued through changes in name and structure for the women’s organization. Every year this birthday offering is donated to specific recipients.
This year’s offering will be shared between ministries abroad and at home. Part of the funds will go to the church’s efforts in education, health care and nutrition in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The grant will provide new roofs for schools, textbooks, teacher training, nutritional instruction, and facilities for church health care workers. In the U.S., the grant will aid the restoration of Lakeview Presbyterian Church Weekday School of New Orleans. The school was virtually destroyed by the flood waters released by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Lakeview’s Weekday School places emphasis on early childhood education as a means to shape the future.
Since this is not 1922 and the value of money has changed, we are asked to donate one dollar for each year of life’s blessings so that others may share those blessings.
