“Seven Can Chicken Soup” – a Lenten Opportunity

Southport Presbyterian Church Posted on March 20, 2022 by SPC NewsMarch 20, 2022

During this Lenten Season, the Mission Ministry invites all to help us collect the ingredients for “Seven Can Chicken Soup”. Please bring in the following canned items: (approximately 15 oz size cans) black beans, pinto beans, diced tomatoes, sweet corn (can be Mexican or regular), coconut milk, chicken broth, and 12.5 oz canned chicken breast. There is a tub in the narthex for you to place your canned items. Our goal is to collect enough cans for the Mission Ministry to make 40 bags to deliver to Coastal Villas (formerly Sacred Heart Villas) so each resident can make this soup.

Coastal Villas is a residential affordable apartment complex for seniors located off Dosher Cutoff Road. If we surpass our goal, bags will be made for food pantry clients to enjoy this soup as well. All canned items should be at the church by April 10, 2022. If you have any questions, you can contact Laura Cacchione, Julia Hill or Sue Meyer.

New SPC Care Network Created for Those in Need of Resources

Southport Presbyterian Church Posted on March 20, 2022 by SPC NewsMarch 20, 2022

The Congregational Care Committee has created a new Care Network Committee to reach out to our church community in times of need. This committee will coordinate services to our church community using resources currently available by church committees and other resources.

The Care Network vision is to be the starting place when a church staff, committee or church member identifies a need within our congregation. The expectation of this committee is to evaluate the needs by performing a home visit or telephone call.

At this time the Care Network Committee has identified the following activities than can be offered to the Southport Presbyterian Church family:
• Visiting
• Sitting
• Driving
• Meals
• Errands
• Light housekeeping
• Light yard work
• Light home repairs (changing light bulbs, replacing filters, faucet leaks, etc.)
We are soliciting members as well, who are willing to assist in these duties when needed. If you are interested in helping us, please call the church office, Gail Hedgecock, Jason Nettles or Gail Gray. These committees see this as an opportunity to reach more members in need without duplicating services or overwhelming them. We will offer support throughout their time of need.

Rise Against Hunger Volunteers Pack Thousands of Food Bags

Southport Presbyterian Church Posted on March 20, 2022 by SPC NewsMarch 20, 2022

More than 65 SPC volunteers packed 9,406 food bags at SPC’s annual food packing event on March 19. The event included assembly stations with volunteers measuring and filling simple bags of rice, soy, dried vegetables and spices; weigh station tables and box packing areas, with designated runners moving the bags from station to station and finally to the large box truck in the parking lot.

Co-founded as Stop Hunger Now in 1998, the organization rebranded to become Rise Against Hunger in 2017. Since 1998 contributions have helped provide five hundred million meals to people in need around the world. Rise Against Hunger’s global initiative has been implementing sustainable community development projects ranging from the meal packaging program that harnesses the passion of local volunteers to promoting self-sufficiency and empowerment in communities, nourishing lives, and responding to emergencies.
