SPC WOW Circle Hosts Baby Shower for Samara’s Village

Southport Presbyterian Church Posted on January 21, 2022 by SPC NewsFebruary 20, 2022

On January 19 the Women of the Word (WOW) Circle put the Word into action by hosting a baby shower for Samaras Village, a community-based, non-profit organization that assists pregnant and parenting adolescents who live in Brunswick County. Members of the circle shopped for clothing, toys and diapers to fill the Village’s ”needs” closet. With additional contributions, WOW was able to purchase three car seats and a stroller.

Debbie Keener, director of Samaras Village, attended the event and shared with the group how Samaras Village helps meet the needs of very young parents, from those who are pregnant to those with children up to 3-years-old. The non-profit organization is the first and only of its kind that targets the problematic teen pregnancy rates in Brunswick County. It provides the connection to community resources, and mentoring to help their clients lead healthy lifestyles and continue their education / career development, with a focus on the physical, social and emotional well-being of themselves and their baby.

Friends from the community are invited to become involved mentoring these parents so that they have guidance raising their children. If you would like to volunteer at Samaras Village in one of many volunteer capacities, or come by and see the facility, call Debbie Keener at 910 294-0292.
Many thanks to WOW member Linda Wetterman for coordinating this event. For more information about the WOW Circle, contact Judy Wetzig at jewetzig@bellsouth.net

Winterfest Bake Sale Nets $1,186 for Food Pantry

Southport Presbyterian Church Posted on December 20, 2019 by SPC NewsJanuary 5, 2020

The Presbyterian Women’s (PW) Annual Bake Sale at Southport’s Annual Winter Craft Festival December 15 raised $1,186 for the Southport Oak Island Interchurch Fellowship Food Pantry. PW Representative Laura Cacchione presented the check to Bill Hogue, manager of the Food Pantry just in time for the Christmas holidays. The PW project was headed by Maggie Lhotsky and Martha Brown, co-chairs of the PW Mission and Giving Committee. Volunteers baked holiday treats, and additional volunteers set up and staffed the booth at Southport’s Annual Winter Craft Festival in Franklin Square Park on Dec. 14. Many thanks to all the bakers, packers and other volunteers who helped make this worthwhile local mission project a huge success!
